Chris Rock calls in best Black Comedians Hollywood has to offer for new movie Top Five! In cinemas now!
We’re waist deep into the Summer Blockbuster Season © now. I wasn’t completely sure but I just looked out of my window and saw someone drive a car into a robot. Explosions are now king, so if you’re looking for an emotional journey you better get your awards season ass outta here and hibernate till some lesbian holocaust drama comes out in November.
This year is looking pretty packed with the usual suspects: Superheroes fighting, cars exploding and dinosaurs eating people. Like always though, there are some comedy palette cleansers scheduled between each new threat to the city/world/universe. One such was released in cinemas on May 8th- Top Five.
Chris Rock writes directs and stars in this semi-autobiographical comedy about a comedian forced to face his past after an interview. I don’t know about you, but as a big Chris Rock stand up fan, I’m already in. Rock’s film form is a little sketchy so I understand if you’re still weary, let’s continue. Also in the cast are: Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Cedric the Entertainer, J.B. Smoove, Tracy Morgan, Kevin Hart, Whoopi Gol- ok, ok I’ll stop, you got the point right?
It seems Rock pulled out his ‘talented black celebrity address book’ and got everyone he could to form a sort of black comedian Avengers. I assume he did it Ocean’s Eleven style and turned up at all their work places unannounced and gave them the nod indicating ‘it’s time’.
A stacked cast isn’t always a guarantee of a good movie, but advanced word is pretty good on this one. 87% on rotten tomatoes, awards, festival runs- all good signs.
Regardless even if you don’t like it, it might just be worth going for novelty of seeing a film full of black people that isn’t about civil rights.
