Disney Rakes In Star Wars & Black Stormtrooper John Boyega!
Are you a Star Wars fan? Well you may or may not like this one. John Boyega better known for his role in the British Sci-fi ‘Attack the Block’, will feature in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Ever since the announcement of Disney’s takeover of the Star Wars franchise opinions have been divided, some looking forward to it while others are sceptical of it ruining the legendary legacy.
Split opinions amongst Star Wars fanatics were to be expected especially with the use of social media, however, I don’t think anyone saw this coming! It seems that it’s not only Disney’s involvement that has gotten Stars Wars critics in a twist but the highly anticipated trailer that was released had them in a frenzy.
Many critics made it clear online that they were the least bit pleased with John Boyega’s appearance as a stormtrooper, with no other reason than the colour of his skin. Really? They can’t fathom a black stormtrooper?
John has since addressed critics with an Instagram post. “To whom it may concern… Get used to it :)’
The racial backlash led to other sources in favour of the film to issue articles and statements informing the unknown that a black stormtrooper is not extraordinary. The Atlantic issued a piece, “Of Course There Are Black Stormtroopers in Star Wars”.
On a positive note, as well as starring in Star Wars and further developing his body of work alongside the franchise. The groundbreaking news is that unlike the former Star Wars trilogies John Boyega’s role is not just a minor black character.
What’s crazy to me is that issues like these are still occurring in 2014! Like what happened to supporting and just spreading the love?
Well in order to see the film you’re going to have to sit tightly and wait a year! If you haven’t already catch the film’s teaser now.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits cinemas on December 15th 2015.
