One to watch – “Girlhood” from award winning French filmmaker Céline Sciamma
When we think of Paris, we envision beautiful things like the Eiffel Tower or the vibrant cafés on every corner serving croissants, crepes and hot coffees.
What we don’t associate it with is the outskirts of Paris… I admit that before I lived in Paris I didn’t even know the suburbs existed. Coming from London, we are a very multicultural city, I was surprised to see how neglected some of the suburbs were and that the residents were mostly Black or Arab.
Girlhood not only focuses on the discrimination or poverty that the residents face but hones in on the importance of girlhood! Written and directed by award-winning French film-maker Céline Sciamma, she brings to light the drama and lifestyles of a group of young Black girls as they become women growing up in the suburbs of Paris.
The film will be in UK cinemas May 8th 2015, catch the trailer here.
