Picture a world where…

pictureaworld

Picture a world where you could find shows starring people who look, talk and speak like you, going through the same things you go through…

Picture a world where every Black guy on TV wasn’t a gang member, drug dealer or a criminal… Let’s not get it twisted, yes there are plenty of those around, but i’m pretty sure we do other stuff too?

Imagine a world where you could watch TV and see a diverse range of people from the Black British Community instead of the same old stereotypes…

Picture a world where our talented Black British actors and entertainers didn’t have to run off to the states to catch a break. Imagine they could get starring roles over here… Imagine they had a choice….

Picture a world where you wouldn’t have to go online to find an American show EVERY time you wanted to watch a show with a face and story you felt you could relate to, like My Wife & Kids…

Picture a world where you could watch a British film or programme and see a Black character in a positive aspirational role, someone you could look up to and aspire to be like…

Picture a world where you could turn on your TV, see a face that looks like yours and say “one day, I wanna be like that guy”…

Picture a world where we had our own Black British Entertainment industry, supported by the community, something like BET (not the dry one we get but the real one Americans watch) only better…

Picture a world where we had our own British versions of films like Brown Sugar, The Wood, Love and Basketball and shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, One on One and All of Us. Why can’t we? We have stories to tell too right?

Picture a world where your opinions, experiences, thoughts and feelings matter, a world where you are just as important as the next guy…

Picture a world where you weren’t made to feel guilty for wanting to showcase and celebrate your talents and your greatness…

This might sound like a crazy dream but everything that’s ever come to pass started off as a dream, a tiny thought in the back of someone’s mind. So as hard as it might be to imagine, I have hope that one day I will no longer have to a picture a world like this, why? Because I’ll be living in it.
