Misfits, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, actress Ruth Negga continues to make strides in 3 new movies!
You may remember Ruth Negga for her part as Nikki – the teleporting hero with a heart condition – during the Golden Age of Misfits, but before Misfits Negga had already established herself with roles in Five Daughters, Criminal Justice and the Cillian Murphy starring Breakfast on Pluto.
Since then, the Ethiopian-Irish actress has had a recurring role in Marvel’s dire Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, appeared in World War Z alongside Brad Pitt and worked with Samuel L Jackson. And now, the Edinburgh International Film Festival has announced that Iona, the latest feature from writer-director Scott Graham which headlines Negga as the eponymous Iona, will close the renowned festival.
Only recently, was it announced that Negga would play Tulip, trained marksman and partner to Dominic Cooper’s Jesse Custer in AMCs Preacher from writing team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. And even more recently Negga was cast as Mildred Loving in Loving, alongside Joel Edgerton (Exodus, Warrior). Directed by the amazing Jeff Nichols (Shotgun Stories, Mud), Loving will tell the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple whose ‘marriage led to the 1967 Loving vs. Virginia Civil Rights case.
Thus far Negga’s career has seen her tackle both ‘franchise wadding’ and independent cinema. Without a doubt, the talented actress has made strides over the past few years and – for me, a young-ish black woman with a dangerous love for the X-Men comic books and a desire to see more women of color leading science-fiction, fantasy and comic book movies (and with Negga leading Preacher and featuring in fantasy RPG adaptation Warcraft) – this is probably the best thing ever.
