South Side Story Showing on BBC3
My best friend introduced me to a show earlier this week called South Side Story, and I thought I would share it with you guys. If you read my posts you will notice I struggle to find consistent film or television that is both Black and British, however this week I believe I am a step closer. Well, the show is not predominantly black but yes it is very British. I am not going to lie and pretend I heard of it before she mentioned but it seems to be getting a lot of coverage. It is even being promoted via everyone’s favourite app of the moment, Snapchat. This being really positive, I mean who doesn’t use Snapchat and finally a show that is bringing an often hidden culture to the forefront.
South Side Story focuses on a group of 18-25 year olds based in my hometown, South London. We watch the group of performers who are living in Brixton, actively seek to fulfil their dreams but of course like every reality show we are also caught up in the affairs of their personal lives and the drama that comes with mixing both worlds. The six part series has tried to mix glee and structured reality television to create a new genre (everyone’s really trying to run with this musical vibe). Not sure if I am in love with all the singing but I really like what the show stands for, how often do we see positive entertaining shows based in the areas we live in on mainstream television, rarely.
The series started on the 26th January 15 and will be shown on BBC Three, but you can also catch up and watch the episodes online via BBC iPlayer.
